Notifications not working

The Ferber app sends two kinds of notification: an optional bedtime reminder, and check-in alerts when each interval ends during a night. Both are scheduled on your iPhone itself. If either is missing, work through this list in order. Most issues are in iOS settings, not the app.

Step 1: Check the iOS permission

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps (on older iOS versions, scroll down), then tap Ferber.
  3. Tap Notifications.
  4. Make sure Allow Notifications is on.
  5. Make sure Sounds, Lock Screen and Banners are on.

Step 2: Check the in-app settings

  1. Open the Ferber app and go to Settings.
  2. In the Notifications section, check that Check-in alerts is on, and Bedtime reminder if you want one.
  3. If a toggle is off, turn it on. The app asks for permission again if it needs to.

Step 3: Check Focus modes

Focus modes, including Sleep and Do Not Disturb, can hold notifications back even when the permission is on. To let Ferber through:

  1. Open Settings > Focus.
  2. Pick the Focus that is active at bedtime (often Sleep or Do Not Disturb).
  3. Under Allow Notifications, tap Apps.
  4. Tap Add and choose Ferber.

Step 4: Check silent mode and sound output

  • If your iPhone is on silent, alerts still appear on screen but will not make a sound.
  • If Bluetooth headphones, AirPods or a speaker are connected, the sound may be playing there instead.

If check-in alerts are missing during a night

This is almost always a Focus mode that switches on at bedtime. After checking Steps 1 to 3, try a short night during the day with your phone locked and see if the first alert arrives. If it does, the app and iOS are set up correctly, and the difference is a Focus schedule that only runs at night. Compare the settings of the Focus that is active at bedtime.

If the bedtime reminder is missing

The bedtime reminder is a single nightly notification at the time you chose. To check or change it:

  1. Open the app and go to Settings > Notifications.
  2. Check the Reminder time.
  3. Turn Bedtime reminder off and back on. This re-registers the schedule with iOS.

If it is still missing the next night, the issue is at the iOS level. Work back through Steps 1 to 4.
